The TAG Heuer Monaco Quartz has launched in three different flavors – a brown dial with brown leather strap (inspired by the Kingsman: The Golden Circle film), a mother of pearl dial with a white strap, and the traditional black dial on a black leather strap. The polished stainless steel case measures in at 37mm, which is a bit smaller than the original Monaco 1133 which measured in at 40mm, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen this size in the Monaco collection. It’s also a well-known fact that square watches wear a bit bigger than round ones, and this, to me anyway, makes the watch more dressy. The dial itself takes some direct cues from the Monaco 2110 with the exception of the red-tipped seconds hand – a great addition, in my opinion. There is a small seconds indicator at 6 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock. “Monaco” and the TAG Heuer logo are printed under the 12 o’clock index.


One thing I’ve always loved about the Monaco design is its seamless and clean utilization of circles and squares together. Pulling off a uniform look with a square case is tricky, and the Monaco is a great example of doing that right. While I’m typically critical of the needless cutting of applied indices, the TAG Heuer Monaco Quartz has a fluid inclusion of them that doesn’t seem to break up the dial, or feel lazy.



There is going to be some outcry from fans of the brand, and enthusiasts in general over the TAG Heuer Monaco Quartz. One, $1,700 is a bit steep for a quartz model, but it’s in line (almost dead center, honestly) with TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 collections, but a much more desirable style for many people. Two (and I’ve already had this discussion with some collectors this weekend), there’s the apparent “bastardization” of the Monaco collection by adding a quartz movement to it. However, let’s not forget that this isn’t the first time a Monaco has had a quartz movement, nor is it the most expensive model that’s included one. This brings the cost of entry for the Monaco collection down significantly and that makes it obtainable to a wider audience – something I don’t think TAG Heuer will have a hard time capitalizing on.

The movement is marked C3133 as opposed to MakTime's earlier designation P3133 but the stamp looks to be that of MakTime. It is claimed the "C" in C3133 stands for Стрела, i.e. Strela.

They look very sharp and probably better than all of the previous re-issues but some moot points are there, especially with certain Russian writings on the dial, the font for Strela etc.

Apparently Raketa Watches sent a letter to some members of a Russian watch forum (watch.ru), in which it told them about their forthcoming new Raketa Automatic with pictures, including an advertising poster for the new watch due to go on sale early 2014. Here are those pictures.
Nice touch. Unless, of course, it is another attempt at free Taliban (i.e. guerrilla) advertising by the Raketa company.
Personally, I miss the Raketa of old - before von Polier - with watches priced at $30 - $40 with a wide variety of dials.

The Grand Seiko SBGE001 Spring Drive GMT – A Beautiful Watch in All Aspects, A Review

Another week of so will be 1 April 2015. It is also April Fools Day as well as the birth date of my first child. For avid watch collectors in Malaysia, it is also a day when the country formally introduces the Goods and Services Tax of GST. When I was looking it up, I was surprised to note that Malaysia is one of six countries in the world that have yet to introduce GST. As it is, by 1 April 2015, all watch purchases will come with an additional GST charge of 6%.

So, in view of this additional cost in funding my WIS addiction, I did what every WIS would do. Get another piece before the tax free window closes! The piece that would forever remind me of this momentous occasion is a watch brand that I have yet to get into the collection – The Grand Seiko SBGE001 Spring Drive GMT.
This time around I got this piece by negotiating with an authorized dealer, AWG in Kuala Lumpur. I was able to get a price that is even better than the internet merchants such as Higuchi and Seiya (more about this later). As the watch is not in stock, the shop needs to make an order and by agreeing to a price at this point, I guess they are willing to give a lot away from the difference between merchant price and retail price. After three weeks of waiting, the watch was delivered.
Since this is the first time I have a Grand Seiko (let’s call it GS for short) in the collection, I would like to spend some time on the packaging.

Perhaps one of the most charming watches on this list and one of the more popular items available from our shop – the Oris Divers Sixty-Five is a great example of a brand updating a classic design with modern materials and manufacturing techniques; replacing a coated brass casing with stainless steel, and a plexiglass crystal with a more modern sapphire crystal.

Retaining the 40mm case size of the original, the Divers Sixty-Five remains of vintage proportions without overly modernising its classic design.

Charismatic box numerals are found by the 12, 3, 6, and 9 markers respectively, that gives this Oris watch a highly distinctive appearance. The luminescent fill used is the SuperLuminova called ‘Light Old Radium’ giving the markers an aged look.

Water-resistant to 100m the Oris Divers Sixty-Five should be more than adequate for use on holiday and semi-professional diving.

The movement used is the Oris Caliber 733 (based on an SW200-1) which beats at 28,800 v/h, contains 26 Jewels and has a modest power reserve of 38 hours. It allows hacking when setting the time, quick setting the date, and hand winding.

Ultimately the Oris Divers-Sixty Five provides a lot of watch for the asking price, is unique in looks being unlikely to be confused with another diving watch, and demonstrates how a brand can re-engineer a classic piece without corrupting the original spirit of the watches design. This diving watch is for the person who would like a quality mechanical watch, that looks different to most dive watches out there, from a reputable brand at an affordable price.

16 – TissotSeastar 1000 Chronograph [T0664171705700] RRP: £440

The second quartz watch to feature on this article the TissotSeastar 1000 Chronograph provides a capable dive watch at a very affordable price point. It includes many features usually to be found on vastly more expensive watches.

Its black bezel is surprisingly a ceramic and the crystal on the front of the watch is a synthetic sapphire crystal. The back of the stainless steel casing is a solid case back which has been screwed in to provide a water-resistance of 300m (990ft) that is more than adequate for most peoples aquatic exploits.

The TissotSeastar 1000 Chronograph’s black rubber strap lends its self to a life in contact with water that will not degrade with prolonged exposure to water unlike every leather strap; the watch strap is held togeather with a tang buckle.

Inside, an ETA Caliber G10.211 movement provides both the time, date and chronograph functionality. A circular date window is located at the 4 o’clock that manages to match the surrounding hour markers in a similar style. The three sub-dials by the 10, 6 and 3 each respectively show a 30-minute register, a 60-second register and a 1/10th of a second register.

A case size of 45mm wide and 13mm thick makes this watch large but of typical proportions for a diving watch.
